IMC methods cover a range of technologies with a focus on off-site manufacture,  with timber, light gauge steel frame and insulated concrete formwork (ICF) amongst the most popular.    More recently materials such as hemp, lime and straw have also become more widely used as methods of house building. 

It is proposed that in order to meet future housing needs and eco standards, industry will be required to use innovative methods of construction due to the speed of construction, energy efficiency, reduced waste levels, current skills shortage as well as the incorporation of renewable energy into the design such as solar.
